A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
