The feeling at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, before he admitted that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized in their performances as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Unexpected Presence
At least one man kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this year. He completed the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to remain there temporarily. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.
He joined in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Finding His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was still trying to identify the nature of the player's talent. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
