Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such medications must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
